From Struggles to Innovation: Uncle Darius’s Journey to Resilient Farming
Meet Darius Gihol, or as he's affectionately known, Uncle Darius. A devoted father and farmer, Darius lives in the remote area of Kalanggaan, where he spent his days growing tobacco and chili on his farm. While the farming itself was straightforward, the real challenge for Darius was getting his produce to market. Every market day, he embarked on a grueling journey: walking 13.6 kilometers to the nearest road, then traveling another 13 kilometers to the market—a difficult routine that wore on him over time.
In search of a better life, Darius and his family relocated to Kg. Togudon. However, they quickly faced a new challenge: excessive rainfall that threatened to destroy their crops. Undeterred by the obstacles, Darius turned to innovative solutions.
He embraced hydroponic farming inside greenhouses—an innovative approach that protected his plants from the unpredictable weather. Now, with a clear vision to expand his greenhouse operations, Darius is focused on strengthening his farming practices and increasing his yields.
AgriData recognizes Darius as an ideal example for the AGRI-SPARK program due to his dedication, hard work, and innovative mindset. His journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance and adaptability in farming, inspiring others in similar situations to push forward with hope and determination.
